Starting my dream job

August 20, 2023 — Gideon Mayhak

I've been putting off writing this post for a while, so I'm going to keep it brief so I get it out there. TL;DR: I am now working part-time with MBOA, the team behind JMP. You can read more about JMP in my previous blog post. You can read some of my immediate thoughts in this blog post.

Right place, right time

First, I want to make it very clear that I was in no way financially involved with MBOA or JMP when I wrote my last blog post. That post was 100% from the perspective of a very satisfied customer. Up to that point, I had commented in the Soprani.ca Project Discussion channel that I would love a job working with free and open-source software (FOSS) if they grew to the point of needing another support person but that was all. I don't want anyone to think there was a conflict of interest.

At the beginning of July, a member of the team messaged me asking if I was interested in providing support in a paid capacity. This may be one of the most exciting messages I've ever received. I was being asked to join a team of like-minded individuals who work almost exclusively with FOSS. I made it clear that I was not yet ready to leave my current job at Northwood Technical College, but I did lay out my off-hours availability and we talked compensation.

I officially started my work with the team during the second week of July, and I was quite happy to help cover support while some of the team members were at FOSSY 2023.

Weekend warrior

Now after hanging out in the public chat for several months and helping where I could as a user, I am working behind the scenes (mostly Friday afternoons and Saturdays) in an official support role. I am learning more about how JMP is run, and I have to say my confidence in the product and the team behind it has only grown. I hope to see JMP and related projects continue to thrive, and I'm so thrilled to be a part of it.

Feel free to message me if you want to chat. You can also find me as "Gnafu the Great" in the main Soprani.ca discussion.
